Bonus Independent Reading

As a class, we are not going to get to The Scarlet Letter this trimester. If you read this book for your independent reading novel, you will receive bonus points. I have books at school. Do not go out and buy a book. Pick one up any time.
On the AP Test, 18th century American literature is usually on it.

Bonus Points


Write a 14 line sonnet in iambic pentameter with a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg
First quatrain - main theme, main metaphor
Second quatrain - theme and metaphor exteneded of complicated, often some imaginative example is given
Third quatrain - a twist or conflict often introduced by a "But"
Couplet - summarizes and leaves the reader with a new, concluding image
Sample modern day sonnets were published in the Calliope for examples
